Comments: I had the honor of writing an article for the TXSG as Hugh was a member of the TXDG in 1941 at the age of 17; entering the US Navy the next year. He made the maiden voyage on the Willard Keith. He recalls in my article the party that Mrs Keith had for them and how big it was. He talked of this destroyer as if she were still in her prime. I am his "god daughter" and a CPT in the Texas State Guard MED BDE in Midland TX. He thrilled my heart as he talked of his tour on this vessel, his task at hand, his injury and having to leave. I understand he made a reunion some years ago when he and Betty were able to travel. He was very excited to make that trip I know that.

Comments: Can I get a Commissioning List? I don't believe the story about
a Japanese torpedo plane launching her "fish" at us....I think that the official
log would would bear me out. We did, however, experience a low-flying Japanese monoplane passing
us close aboard our port side, with the pilot smiling at us. He caught us napping!
The Gunnery Officer, LT Holmes, was asleepin the MK 37 director and all the
40mm gun mounts were in "automatic" and couldn't be fired by the gun crews. We could have
hit the guy with potatoes. :-)) TM3/c Linn tried to cock a 20mm in the gun tub
at the fantail but wasn't able to do so alone. How many members do you have that are over 82 years old?
Became qualified in submarines in 1954 and retired from submarine service on
2/1/66, after 24 years active duty
